Good article on much overlooked tools for production.

 Drums synthesis
A fundamentally overlooked and neglected part of production, and why it shouldn't be!

drum synthesis is simply paramount if your going to move beyond the norm. Synthesizing your own drums allows you to change fundamental parameters of sound more than any sampler could with a .wav file. Being able to substantially change things such as velocity, timbre, resonance, etc. gives one the nectar of the gods when it comes to having good drums. Ofcourse learning synthesis can be a daunting and usually frightening task.

Why I think producers should take the time to learn:

  • it's something your going to want to do eventually
  • it's your own sound, not another awesome but frequently used Vengeance soundpack
  • your learning about synthesis in general (skill spills over into making your own leads, etc.)

 Why not?
  •  Taking time to learn synthesis can take away from time that could be well spent on other parts of production such as Arrangement and Mixing/Mastering.
  • Drum VST's can seem expensive for requiring such a commitment to get the most bang for your buck
  • Everyone uses Vengeance packs because they are still very decent and definitely liked
  • Your lazy and don't need another thing to procrastinate about

Like a music production, DJing, or Trance related book?

One book I would highly recommend would have to be Dance Music Manual by Rick Snoman. I'd like to say that I am in no way affiliated with Rick Snoman in anyway other than by owning his book. Don't let that vivaciously generic and innocent  title fool you for one second. Snoman has been a big part of the EDM community for many years and is very well versed. The book is broken into 3 parts and I cannot recommend it highly enough

    -Technology and Theory
  • Sound design
  • Compression and Effects
  • Mixing & Mastering
  • Programming theory
  • Music theory

    -Dance Genres
  • House
  • Trance
  • UK Garage
  • Techno
  • Hip-Hop (Rap)
  • Trip-Hop
  • Ambient/Chill Out
  • Drum 'n' Bass
    -Mixing and Promotion
  • Mixing
  • Mastering
  • Publishing and Promotion
  • Remixing and Sample Clearance
  • A DJ's Perspective

    -7-part Appendix
  •  Binary and Hex
  • Decimal to Hexadecimal Conversion Table
  • General MIDI Instrument Patch Maps
  • General MIDI CC List
  • Sequencer Note Divisions
  • Tempo Delay Time Chart
  • Musical Note to MIDI and Frequencies
     -And an awesome index too!

Music Production vs. DJing

Music Production vs. DJing For me this has to be one of the strangest, yet most interesting concepts in being an electronic musician... As a music producer you are working on your own time for your own self making music that you love. Production is a solitary process even in times of collaboration. But DJing is a collective process, it's about feeling the room... vibing with crowds.. If there is one thing I have learned this crazy year it would have to be: Set your standards higher than the highest expectations of your fans and you have success. I met a beautiful girl tonight, only to find she was a pessimist, she talked about how all her old relationships were guys similar to me, guys with intense passion and dreams. This definitely felt disconcerting but I found myself in an interesting place. She was someone who didn't try, She was someone who just wanted to remain. I realized the difference. It was comfort versus growth. Whenever we grow too comfortable, we aren't pushing our limits. So in order to be our best selves, to allow the best flow for a good life... We must push onward! p.s. this kind of went off tangent from the subject-heading, but hey I'm a musician, not a writer!

Who needs drugs? Merely existing and being aware of the universe is the greatest 'trip' of them all.

How does one deal with the seemingly impossible to conceptualize reality of existence? The innate non-possibility of not only full understanding but conceptualized retention of any thought near that caliber!

Not settling for summer.

I think that the key to successful music production is to look at it as a war rather than a battle. In a battle everything happens at once, all of your chips thrown down at once so to speak. In a war however, The smallest intricacies given the recurrence of time become large monumental things. It is quintessential to become a skilled planner, disorganization is unacceptable. The interesting thing is that you must be against your self, your worst self. The lazy side of you that wants short term emotional gratifications. The part that says "Just do it tomorrow," the problem with this is that waiting for tomorrow is an unreliable platform to base a life on if it has difficult aspirations and dreams.

English essays are painful.

Making up two English essays tonight, no sleep at all. This summer I will be trying to finish approximately two albums, 24 songs in total. Some special gems will include collaborations between myself and Dave Carnicelli. Quite loud and very individual styles between ourselves so collaboration may be a challenge. Hope everyone is having a nice cup of tea, a pair of cozy headphones on, and some good trance to listen to. Will update blog soon, sorry to those who have talked to me about not updating, I've been seriously busy but Summer brings new days!

Just a little preview ladies and gents..

A great article about Trance, a small apology

Below is an article that really resides with us here at Intelligently Furious in promoting musical experiences which allow people to experience great vibes and perhaps a deeper consciousness perhaps rivaled only by great literature, philosophy, and of course other awesome music.

from Draufgänger (aka DJ Considine): "I've always found myself perplexed by people who cannot understand trance music, to me it makes sense in almost too many ways. It combines elements of other EDM genres while at the same time maintains and heavily promotes a strong foundation in music theory, and many times a modern tribute to classical music through the use of melodic arpeggio. In essence, it's simply epic"

Also a small apology to anyone who expected an update sooner, It's been pretty hectic yet we cannot stress enough our sincerest condolences to those who's lives and perhaps realities have been completely shattered by the lack of the promised blog update, in layman's terms: "sorry, bro."
