Around 4am on a Wednesday night, what do I have to lose?
It is the troubling attempt of many a musician or artist for that matter to convey what they feel through their own crafted medium. How does one explain the emotion of a phrase in a language someone doesn't understand? This is the feeling I get when somebody asks me what I like to do, and generally get a response like "oh... trance music.. isn't that with like the 4/4 kick drum that just keeps repeating" "it just sounds like a bunch of noise to me" I'd sometimes feel very frustrated by this and explain that the bass drum is usually just for the intro and that the arrangement of a trance track is about the buildup, maybe even more so than 'the drop' itself. Living in our modern world with constant distractions and hyper paced lifestyles I can understand the sentiment when somebody says, "I dunno dude, I don't get it." But this is a predictable reaction, we live in a world of instant gratification yet the irony of this is that we predicate more on the feeling of being at peace at times. Being at peace, for me involves having the patience to listen to a song that's 10-12 minutes long and try to get the big picture the artist was trying to convey. I think it's pretty cool how trance fans are a small but very tight knit group of folks that at the end of the day when all is said and done can say, "dude... I'm losing my mind! this is so epic!" I think this is the distinction that has to be made. To train ones' ears to hear the sublime subtle aspects of sound frequency encapsulated in melody and rhythm is surely a feat in itself.
